Company biographies

Alan Fairbairn biography

Alan Fairbairn is English, and has lived in France since 1985, in which year he started his training at the Jacques Lecoq school in Paris. In 1989 he founded Théâtre Décalé and since 1996 he has also worked with the Primitives (another Lecoq company, based in Belgium)… their shows Cook It and Wash It have travelled the world to street and theatre festivals. Since 2004 he has participated in the Cabaret Nono with Serge Noyelle's Company. His most recent shows with Théâtre Décalé are The Dodo Show and The Harry Stork Cabaret… Since 2004 he has taught regularly at the Samovar school of clowning in Paris.

His expressive eyebrows, his stare that could kill, and his malicious mouth… an exceptional clown, pitiful but lucid, who combines absurd situations with very well constructed visual numbers (Thierry Voisin, L'Express, France)

Craig Weston biography Craig Weston

Craig Weston was born in Spokane Washington, U.S.A. on the 16/12/57. He studied at St. Olaf College, Northfield Minnesota (music, voice and composition, 1980) before coming to Europe where he studied at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq, Paris, 1982-1984 Since 1984 he has lived in Ghent Belgium. He works as a freelance director, actor, composer and teacher.

Craig was a co-founder of the theatre company Wissel Theater. The company was based in Gent, and in the '80's created four original plays. The most successful, Ou est la Bete ? played extensive tours of Belgium, Holland, France and England, (London Mime Festival) as well as in international theatre fesivals in Granada, Spain and The Kitchen in N.Y.C. Craig has directed several productions in Belgium ; for example Tik (an adaptation of Chekov's Three Sisters) and Koning Lear. He was also director of various children's plays for Het Speeltheater in Gent, among which Nacht in Februari, was co-winner of the Signaal Prijs for youth theatre in the season 86-87. He co-founded the theatre company The Primitives in 1995. To date the company has produced four original plays for theatre: Up, Cook It!, Wash It!, and Nog, as well as Hark, Cook It!, Wash It!, ZZZ, Swan Lake and Big Structure for the street. The company has played these productions in thousands of performances throughout Europe, Australia, Israel and Palestine, the U.S.A., Canada and Japan.

Craig was an actor and dancer with Ensemble Leporello in the productions: Antigone (contemporary opera) Monstrueux (dance piece) and Een Tartuffe, and music composer for three dance pieces by Les Ballets C de la B: Everyman from Hans Vandenbroek, O Boom and Bonjour Madame from Alain Platel. His latest directing work (2007) has been in Belgium and Slovenia.

Markus Kupferblum biography Markus Kupferblum

Director, The World of Harry Stork. Born 12/06/64 in Vienna, Austria, where he now lives.

After studying as an actor at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in Vienna he trained in Paris at the Ecole de Philippe Gaulier (1986), during which time he met Alan Fairbairn. Their first collaboration was in 1989 when Markus was able to invite Théâtre Décalé to the Vienna festival. Markus subsequently directed Théâtre Décalé in two productions, Décalages (1996) and Insomnia (1999). He has become something of a specialist in directing opera, with many produtions in several different companies. By way of contrast he also directed the award-winning clown performance Les Moustaches de la Reine with his own company (Avignon, 1993).

From 1987 to 1994, he was Director of the Totales Theater in Vienna. He has taught clown in Vienna, in Paris, in London, in Canada, in South Korea, in Israel and in Italy. His latest project Die verlassene Dido won the Nestroy Award for the best Off-Theatre Production 2007.
